AmeriHealth Caritas will sell health insurance on Ohio's Marketplace for the first time in 2027, adding a new option for Hamilton County residents including those in Evendale, Sharonville, Springdale and Woodlawn.
The Pennsylvania-based insurer announced the expansion in a press release, according to the Journal-News. The company's AmeriHealth Caritas Next plans will be available in 11 Ohio counties, including Hamilton County. Open enrollment begins Nov. 1.
The plans will also cover the Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo and Youngstown metro areas and most surrounding suburbs, according to the company.
Andy Marino, senior vice president of Medicare, Exchange, and Provider Network at AmeriHealth Caritas, said in the press release that the plans aim to give Ohio families more choices in health coverage. He said the company wants to build on the foundation it established with Ohio Medicaid enrollees.
AmeriHealth Caritas has operated in Ohio since February 2023, when it began serving Medicaid enrollees through its managed care plan, AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio. The company will offer Marketplace coverage in seven states in 2027.
The number of insurers on Ohio's Marketplace is shrinking. The Ohio Department of Insurance approved nine companies to sell on the exchange for 2027, down from 11 in 2026, the Journal-News reported. Two current insurers are leaving. CareSource, based in Dayton, and Molina Healthcare of Ohio will not offer Marketplace plans in 2027. About 54,000 Ohioans get coverage through those two insurers on the exchange, according to the department.
Nationally, 11 carriers have announced exits from ACA Marketplaces for 2027, while six have announced new state entries, according to KFF, a health policy research organization. KFF tied the shifts to the expiration of enhanced premium tax credits at the end of 2025, which drove enrollment down by more than a million between the 2025 and 2026 open enrollment periods.
Five Ohio counties will have only two insurers offering Marketplace plans in 2027. All other counties will have three or more, based on the department's approved plan information.
Residents who enroll by Dec. 15 will have coverage starting Jan. 1, 2027. Open enrollment runs through Jan. 15, 2027.
