A 27-year-old construction worker was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 275 eastbound in Springdale early Friday, Sept. 18, shutting down the highway for hours near the I-75 interchange.

Joshwa Christopher Holland of Adams County died at Bethesda North Hospital after being hit while working on the interstate, Fox 19 reported. Holland worked for Jurgensen Construction, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Springdale police responded to the scene near the 42.6-mile post, just east of Princeton Pike, just before 4 a.m. The crash occurred near Route 747 on I-275.

The sheriff's office said Holland went into the single open lane of traffic while working on the highway. A 2015 Ford Fusion struck him, according to the sheriff's office. He was taken by ambulance to Bethesda North Hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to WCPO.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the crash. The sheriff's office said speed and impairment are not factors, and no charges are pending.

Kathleen Fuller, with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), confirmed to WLWT that a crew member for the contractor doing work in the area was involved in the crash. She did not have further details. Bridge repair work was planned in the area that week, according to WLWT, though the connection between that project and the crash has not been established.

Holland's wife, Shayla, described him to Fox 19 as a "wonderful man who was always willing to help those in need."

I-275 eastbound was closed for several hours Friday morning while investigators worked the scene. WLWT reporter Kelly Rippin reported on X at 4:45 a.m. that all eastbound lanes were at a standstill. Early detours routed drivers along Springfield Pike to Kemper to Mosteller and back to I-275 East, or along Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway to I-75. The roadway reopened later Friday.

The investigation remains open.
