Luke Kuechly, the Evendale kid who grew up on Horncastle Drive between I-71 and I-75, becomes only the third Greater Cincinnati high school football product ever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he takes the stage Aug. 8, in Canton.

The ceremony begins at noon at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. ESPN and NFL Network will carry the broadcast.

Kuechly, a 2009 St. Xavier High School graduate, joins Roger Staubach (1960 Purcell graduate, inducted 1985) and Cris Carter (1984 Middletown graduate, inducted 2013) in that exclusive local fraternity. At 35, he is the second-youngest player ever inducted, behind only Gale Sayers.

His father, Tom Kuechly, will present him for enshrinement.

"In my wildest dreams, the Hall of Fame was never something I thought about as a young player," Kuechly told the Canton Repository on Tuesday, Aug. 4. "I wanted to play well for Kevin Harris on the third- and fourth-grade team. I wanted to start on the seventh/eighth-grade team as a seventh grader. I wanted to start for the Xavier varsity as a junior."

Harris coached Kuechly in the St. Saviour Parish Golden Bears CYO program starting in fourth grade. The journey from those Evendale practice fields to Canton took two decades and included eight seasons with the Carolina Panthers, seven Pro Bowl selections, five First-Team All-Pro honors, the 2012 Defensive Rookie of the Year award and the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year.

There's a full-circle element to Saturday's setting. As a junior in 2007, Kuechly helped St. Xavier go 15-0 and win the Ohio Division I state championship at the same Canton stadium where he'll be enshrined.

"It's full circle," Kuechly said.

St. Xavier heads north

The current St. Xavier football team plans to leave at 6:30 a.m. Saturday to watch the ceremony in person. Head coach Steve Specht, who coached Kuechly through high school and still leads the Bombers, traveled to Canton on Friday, Aug. 7.

"I'm so excited to see the whole event," Specht told WCPO on Thursday, Aug. 6. "I'm so excited for Luke and his family."

Kuechly credited Specht and his parents for shaping his path. His mother, Eileen (Burke) Kuechly, is a 1978 Deer Park graduate; his father played goalkeeper for the Xavier University soccer team. The family's roots in Greater Cincinnati run deep.

Kuechly was elected to the Hall in February in his second year of eligibility. He'll be enshrined alongside Drew Brees, Roger Craig, Larry Fitzgerald and Adam Vinatieri, bringing the Hall's total membership to 387.

As we reported July 29, Kuechly has also been named Netflix's lead NFL game analyst for the 2026 season, pairing with play-by-play broadcaster Noah Eagle.

The Princeton Vikings open their own football season Thursday, Aug. 20, against Archbishop Moeller at Paycor Stadium.
