Princeton City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mari E. Phillips sent a message to district families on Sept. 11, marking the 25th anniversary of the 2001 attacks.

In a letter posted on the district's website, Phillips honored the lives lost and expressed what she called profound gratitude for first responders who risked their lives to help others. She noted that many Princeton students know Sept. 11 only through books, videos or the stories of others.

Phillips said educators, parents and caregivers carry a responsibility to help future generations understand the day's meaning. She pointed to the unity, resilience, courage and compassion that emerged after the 2001 attacks as values that should guide how the district serves students and supports the community.

Phillips took the superintendent role on Aug. 1 after more than 40 years with Princeton City Schools, where she previously served as associate superintendent before retiring in 2023.

Princeton High School hosts a college application completion session Sept. 17.
