Dr. Mari E. Phillips, who takes over as Princeton City Schools superintendent on Saturday, August 1, sent her first welcome letter to families across Evendale, Woodlawn, Sharonville, and Springdale on Tuesday, July 21, setting the tone for the 2026-2027 school year under the theme "Every Student, Every Opportunity."

The letter also gave parents the dates they need: Princeton is using a staggered start this fall, with the first students reporting Thursday, August 13.

Phillips' background

She has spent more than 40 years in the district, serving as teacher, counselor, building administrator, director of student services, assistant superintendent, and most recently associate superintendent, according to the district's April 29 appointment announcement. The Board of Education named her superintendent that same day.

Phillips replaces G. Elgin Card, who served from 2023 until his departure to lead Middletown City Schools, according to WYSO reporting.

In April 2023, Phillips received the Leadership Award from the Ohio Alliance of Black School Educators. She is a University of Cincinnati graduate who has also taught leadership courses there as an adjunct professor.

When the board announced her appointment in April, Phillips said: "Princeton has always held a special place in my heart. I am honored to return and serve the district in this role."

What the letter says

In her July 21 message, published on the Princeton City Schools website, Phillips wrote that the district's guiding commitment is providing every student "a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment." She urged families to stay connected with teachers, attend school events, and remain involved in their children's education.

She closed with a personal note, asking families to introduce themselves if they see her at a school or community event.

"As Always, Go Vikes!" she signed off.
