Princeton High School is offering grief counseling after the death of Steve Duke, a retired social studies teacher and Marine veteran.

Duke spent more than 24 years in the district. Principal James Stallings announced his death in a letter to families on Sept. 13. No cause of death was disclosed.

Duke took a leave of absence after spring break and retired from Princeton City Schools in May. He taught social studies and Advanced Placement History at Princeton High School. In 2017, he was named Viking Excellence Teacher of the Year.

Superintendent Mari Phillips, in a statement on behalf of the school board, said Duke was a leader and mentor whose commitment extended beyond the classroom. She described him as deeply invested in his students, someone who built meaningful relationships while working to help them succeed.

The district described Duke as a steadying presence in the Social Studies Department who shared resources, lesson plans, advice and his knowledge of technology with colleagues. As an AP History teacher, he challenged students while making sure they felt supported and confident in the material.

Stallings wrote that he shared the news on a Sunday so families could talk with their children about the loss in a way appropriate for each household.

Counseling resources

A support team of school psychologists, counselors and pupil support staff will be available at Princeton High School starting Monday, Sept. 14, and will remain for as long as needed.

Staff from Talbert House, MindPeace and Curelink will also be on-site for students and staff.

Fernside, a Cincinnati-area children's grief support organization that serves ages 3–18 at no cost, is available by phone at 513-246-9140. Fernside is located at 4360 Cooper Road, Suite 100, in Cincinnati.

The district advised parents to watch for changes in sleep or eating patterns, unusual fears or anger, clinging behaviors and loss of interest in usual activities as signs a child may be struggling with grief.

The district said it will share obituary and memorial service details when they become available.
