GE Aerospace's software division signed two European airlines to its data analytics tools on July 22, adding a software revenue stream alongside the engine orders that have dominated the Evendale company's week at the Farnborough International Airshow in England.
ITA Airways, Italy's national carrier, agreed to implement both Fuel Insight and FlightPulse. Austrian Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group, signed on for FlightPulse alone, extending an existing relationship with GE Aerospace's analytics platform.
Both deals were formalized at signing ceremonies at the airshow, according to GE Aerospace press releases issued July 22.
Andrew Coleman, president and general manager of GE Aerospace's Software as a Service division, said fuel represents "one of the aviation industry's most significant cost points but also represents one of the biggest opportunities for improvement with the right insights to inform flight operations."
The two products work together. Fuel Insight monitors fuel performance across airline teams including flight operations, dispatch, and fuel management. FlightPulse is a mobile app that delivers flight-specific data directly to pilots before and after each flight, helping them spot patterns and adjust decisions around fuel use and safety.
Austrian Airlines already uses GE Aerospace's EMS platform for safety and fuel analytics. Capt. Oliver Cantele, project lead for Austrian Airlines and the Lufthansa Group, said in the company's press release that FlightPulse will make those insights "available to pilots in a more direct way, supporting decisions tied to safety, fuel-saving procedures, and our sustainability goals."
GE Aerospace says its software-as-a-service customers have seen roughly 15% higher adoption of fuel-saving procedures and 20% higher success rates for sustainability procedures, though the company does not disclose sample sizes or measurement periods. In the first year of use, GE Aerospace reports an average of 1.88 million kilograms of fuel saved per customer.
The Wednesday signings cap a busy Farnborough week for the software unit. On July 20, GE Aerospace announced that the Air France KLM Group signed a five-year Fuel Insight agreement covering Air France, Hop! and Transavia France, according to a separate company press release.
GE Aerospace is headquartered in Evendale with approximately 57,000 employees worldwide. The company reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $2.02 on July 16, above analyst consensus, and raised its full-year guidance to $7.65–$7.85 per share, according to financial data aggregated by CNN Markets.
Neither press release disclosed contract dollar values or implementation timelines for the ITA Airways or Austrian Airlines deployments.
