Students and staff at Heritage Hill Elementary School in Springdale wore red, white and blue on Sept. 11 to mark the 25th anniversary of the 2001 attacks.

The school held a patriotic dress day and building-wide lessons on Patriot Day, according to a post on the school's website. Many students and staff participated, and the school said learning about the day's significance took place throughout the building.

Staff at Springdale Elementary also dressed in patriotic attire to remember the victims of the attacks. That school's post described the observance as a moment to remember American resiliency but did not mention student participation or classroom lessons.

The building-level observances came the same day Superintendent Dr. Mari E. Phillips sent a district-wide letter calling on educators and families to help students understand the day's lessons. As we reported Sept. 11, Phillips honored the lives lost and the first responders who risked their safety.
